Beginner's Gardening Series

Have you wanted to grow your own beautiful flowers and fresh produce, but don't know where to start? Join us for a series of gardening programs this summer, for beginners just like you!

Have you wanted to grow your own beautiful flowers and fresh produce, but don't know where to start? Join us for a series of gardening programs this summer, for beginners just like you!  Even seasoned gardeners will learn some nontraditional gardening techniques to save time, money and energy.

All programs will begin with an informative session in Annex Room A, followed by hands-on demonstration and work outside in the Main Library Community Garden (located between the Main Library and Annex building).

Wednesday, May 22, 4 to 6pm - Planning & Planting a Garden

We'll talk about garden dreaming and planning, what grows in Ohio's Zone 6, where to find seeds, and how to start them!

Wednesday, June 26, 4 to 6pm - Garden Maintenance

Keeping up with a jungly garden is the hardest part!  We'll talk about mulching, pests, weeds, fertilizing/amending, tying and training plants on trellises, and ways to protect your plants from the heat.

Wednesday, July 31, 4 to 6pm - Maximizing the Harvest (without canning!)

It's nearly impossible to use your harvest as it comes in.  We'll talk about preservation methods other than canning; how to make your own spices, oils and tinctures; fridge pickling; seed-saving; and what to do with all those zucchini!

This program series is sponsored by the "Creating Healthy Communities" initiative of the Ross County Health District.

ProCon Professional Construction Services also donated their services in helping to restore the community garden beds in the Main Library Green.
