Characteristics Desired in Library Volunteers

  • Ability to interact with library patrons, staff, and other volunteers in a positive, pleasant manner
  • Good attendance & commitment to volunteer responsibilities
  • Willingness to follow supervisory direction
  • Willingness to complete training related to assigned work
  • Willingness to be supportive of the library and its policies
  • Manual and Physical dexterity
  • Ability to follow directions
  • Knowledge of alphabetical order and decimals

Volunteer Opportunities

Tasks that may be performed by volunteers are listed below, however not all opportunities are available at all times. 

  • Shelve books and other materials
  • Straighten and dust books and shelves
  • Ensure shelved materials are in proper order
  • Clean materials
  • Help with programs and projects (Bookworm, crafts, events, etc.)
  • Genealogy & local history research
  • Help with obituary file
  • Clerical tasks
  • Discard old materials (newspapers, etc.)

How to Become a Volunteer

  • All volunteers are required to fill out the Volunteer Application Form and be interviewed by the Volunteer Coordinators.
  • Volunteers are selected based on their qualifications in relation to the existing needs of the library.  The number of volunteers accepted is based on the amount of work and supervisory time available.
  • The Volunteer Coordinators will review the completed application form and schedule interviews with any selected applicants. If not selected, applications will be kept on file for six months.
  • Volunteer service should be sufficient in scope and duration to justify the investment of staff time in training and managing the volunteers.
  • Adult Volunteers under consideration will be subject to a background check.
  • Volunteers under age eighteen must have the application signed by a parent or legal guardian.
